Bionic transformation must result in integrated bionic digital platforms with converged data, hyper-connectivity, and distributed intelligence at the edge. Automating and digitalizing processes and activities isn’t good enough. The Bionic Enterprise focuses on value effects and outcomes that can be achieved through a process or user experience at enterprise scale. We must design that system so that technology interfaces and interaction experiences enable desirable outcomes.

C-level execs do not need to know how to build architectures and models of the enterprise. They do need to think beyond revenue and profit and view the enterprise as a holistic system whose output is value. That value is generated through value streams (internal facing and customer facing) each supporting multiple user experiences.

In the absence of such a comprehensive framework, anything less is really a patchwork of siloed solutions. Hardly a plan for success. In this construct, the enterprise itself becomes the next killer app. The enterprise of the future will not build killer apps; it will become the killer app. The future belongs to those organizations that can do three things:

  • “See” and use their architecture to fuse intelligent technologies with every aspect of the organization to achieve improved human experiences,

  • Recognize and adjust to paradigm shifts to maintain enterprise relevance and vitality,

  • Manage their transformation to maintain competitive advantage and strategic relevance.

Artificial intelligence, the internet of things, big data, and data science are beginning to help us see things and manage things about our organizations that often avoid notice and analysis. AI is defending computer networks and providing medical diagnoses. It is helping us to see and sense things inside of us and around us. Regardless of the specific technologies and products, the human perspective will always take us back to the “Why”. Why are we doing this? Why are we trying to achieve something?

Enterprise architecture is about managing change, but change does not begin with technology. It begins with hearts and minds, and it begins with a clear mission, vision, and desired end-state. That requires visionary leadership supported by innovation and the creative enterprise. Culture is everything and creativity, innovation, and visionary leadership are key elements of culture.

Paradigm shifts affect business, society, government, and defense. Organizational Transformation begins with establishing an understanding of the basics of paradigm shifts and how they affect organizations and strategic planning. Strategic plans are great, but they must be made with full knowledge of the elements of the ecosystem of the enterprise. Does your organization have a good grasp of current or emerging paradigms affecting your ecosystem? All the technology in the world cannot help if the organization does not understand and accommodate the current paradigm in which it is operating. More enlightened and mature organizations will plan their own self-initiated paradigm shifts to maintain a leadership position within its domain.

The value of the framework is that it distills all the essential elements of the future in a way that can still be understood by executives or technologists alike. I have sought to achieve a level of simplicity of concept: fusing AI and intelligent technologies not just to human activity, but to the evolution of humanity and society.

The technologies of the Bionic Enterprise will change the structure and function of organizations and society. We need a framework to organize their application and put them into meaningful context.

Let us not become so enthralled with the implementation and innerworkings of technologies that we forget why we seek them. Becoming bionic is about enhancing our daily lives on a personal level or at school, play or work. We have the technology and soon the technology will begin developing itself as AI becomes its own source of innovation.
