The Technology Perspective

The Technology Perspective of the Bionic Enterprise is concerned with convergence of technologies and the application of artificial intelligence to many technologies as a means of animating them in ways we have never seen. In popular terms this is the 4th Industrial Revolution. This revolution, however, cannot be just about the technology. Technology will be increasingly imbued with intelligence, but the capabilities of these new technologies must be understood, not feared. The Technology Perspective of a Bionic Enterprise will gradually become more intelligent to augment human intelligence and physical capabilities and provide collaborative and innovative perspectives that will help organizations and society itself become smarter, exhibiting empathy, and more human-centric. For this technology to be truly effective, the Human Perspective and the Technology Perspective must become fused. A symbiosis must exist and be encouraged for organizations to take full advantage of technology as technology becomes a natural extension of some of our physical and cognitive aspects.

The Technology Perspective includes the Technology Maturity Model which describes the main capability areas and maturity levels that technologies will take as they converge and mature toward the Singularity or some point in the future where machines achieve artificial or synthetic intelligence. Machine learning will enable technology to achieve higher levels of intelligence as it follows an example of learning that addresses both the knowledge dimension of learning and the cognitive dimension of acting upon that knowledge.

Combined, these intersecting dimensions provide a framework for describing levels of intelligence that can guide the development of higher forms of machine intelligence. Bloom’s Taxonomy provides a straightforward framework to guide research toward these machine learning and machine cognition capabilities. We hear much in the news about machine learning, but there is knowledge representation – how to store and organize what has been learned, and machine cognition – the cognitive tasks that can be accomplished by acting upon that knowledge.
